Description

INTRODUCTION The small amounts of radioactively important gases present in the atmosphere play a critical role in maintaining even temperatures on the earth. Short wave radiation from the sun reaches the earth's surface unhindered but the outgoing long wave radiation is partially trapped or retained by the atmosphere. The atmosphere absorbs thus some of the long-wave radiation, emitted by the earth, and radiates energy back to it. This downward flux warms the earth and is known as greenhouse radiation, because of which the average temperature of the earth is about 15[degrees] Celsius, and life, as we know it, is possible on the earth. In the absence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere temperatures on this planet would be much lower than they are, about-20[degrees] Celsius. Man-induced variations in the level of some of the radioactively important gases in the atmosphere are predicted to cause global warming and change in climate.
